BBQ Tofu

BBQ Tofu

Tofu is the versatile chameleon of the vegetarian grilling world. It transforms into a delicious and protein-rich main dish when marinated in a smoky barbecue sauce and grilled. The key is to press the tofu to remove excess moisture before marinating, allowing it to soak up the flavors of your sauce. The result is a chewy, slightly crispy outer layer with a tender inside, making it perfect for sandwiches or enjoyed on its own.

For grilled BBQ tofu:

  • Preheat a grill or grill pan to medium-high heat.
  • If you are grilling on a BBQ aim for medium to high heat, make sure the grill is clean and brush with oil to prevent the tofu sticking.
  • Place the tofu on a plate and brush with BBQ sauce on all sides. If grilling cubes, thread the tofu onto metal or soaked wooden skewers.

Notes

Note 1: Tofu can be a little moist so press between two paper towels for at least 20 minutes. If you are going to cook a lot with tofu consider buying a modest tofu press (think Christmas and birthday) or if you are handy why not make one yourself?
Note 2. Don’t feel bad if you decide to use a store-bought BBQ sauce transferring to a healthier diet can be a process that takes time. It makes absolute sense if you have a bottle in your fridge or larder. Remember this is about minimising waste. Going forward maybe try our easy BBQ sauce recipe that stores well.
Note 3: 425°F is the temperature that works for our oven. Temperatures on stoves aren’t always accurate so you may find anything between 400°F and 450°F works for you.
