Gluten Free Apple Crumble

Gluten Free Apple Crumble

When it comes to comfort food, there are not many options better than an apple crumble served with warm custard or vanilla ice cream. Crumble is a perfect dessert but can be enjoyed anytime, even cold, with a nice cup of coffee.

Ingredients

Crumble Topping

  • â…” cup light or dark brown sugar
  • 2 cup old-fashioned whole rolled oats (certified GF)
  • 1 cup almond meal or almond flour*
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • â…” cup unsalted butter, melted

Apple Filling

  • 5 cups peeled & chopped Granny Smith apples
  • 2 teaspoons lemon juice
  • ½ cup light or dark brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1½ tablespoons cornstarch
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground allspice
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350°F (177°C). Grease a pie pan or similar. 9" dish is about the right size (see note below).

Apple Filling

  • Stir all of the filling ingredients together in a large bowl. Make sure the apples are evenly coated. Spread evenly into prepared pan.

Crumble Topping

  • Stir the brown sugar, oats, and almond meal together. Break up any large clumps of brown sugar. Stir in the cinnamon and salt. Once combined, stir in the melted butter. Sprinkle topping over the apples.
  • Bake for 35–40 minutes or until the filing is bubbly, the apples are a little soft, and the topping is browned. If it looks like the topping is browning too quickly, cover the top loosely with aluminum foil about halfway through baking time. Allow to cool for 5–10 minutes before serving.

Notes

A 9″ pie dish is about the right size, but if you like a higher apple filling-to-crumble ratio, choose a deeper dish/pan and adjust the amount of apple filling. Cooking time may take a little longer.

Make Ahead

If you like to make it ahead of time, there are a couple of options.
You can part cook this crumble pie for 30 minutes and then cook it for a further 20 minutes if it’s being prepared for a later meal. Covering and refrigerating for up to 5 days is OK.
If you want to keep it longer, freeze it before cooking. When you want to enjoy the crumble, allow it to defrost overnight in the fridge before baking.

Apples

I like the taste and texture of a firm, tart apple like Granny Smith. But you can add in a couple of Fuji or Honeycrisp if you like something sweeter.

Spices

Feel free to increase the spice content to create an even more tasty and fragrant dessert. It’s all about experimenting and finding what you like.
